FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE

"POUNDCAKE" WAS BROUGHT ABOUT MORE BY ALEX VAN HALEN'S INSIGHT THAN EDWARD'S.  ALEX WAS LISTENING TO A TAPE OF ED JAMMING AND HE SUGGESTED THE RIFF EDWARD SPONTANEOUSLY CAME UP WITH FOR A SONG.  A DRILL WAS LEFT IN THE STUDIO FROM A GUITAR TECH AND EDWARD FIGURED OUT HOW TO PICK IT UP AND USE IT.

"JUDGMENT DAY" WAS THE FIRST SONG RECORDED ON FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE.  EDWARD USED HIS TRAY TABLE TO LAY THE GUITAR FLAT IN FRONT OF HIM TO PLAY THE SONG IN A RARER TWO HANDED TECHNIQUE.

"SPANKED" WAS A WORD PRODUCER ANDY JOHNS SAID REFERRING TO THE SOUND OF THE NEW AMPS EDWARD WAS USING.  HE SAID THEY SOUNDED "SPANKED".

THE WORD WAS ADOPTED BY THE BAND IMMEDIATELY.  EDWARD VAN HALEND PLAYED A BASS THROUGH HIS MARSHAL AMPS ON THIS SONG.  THE OPENING, BUZZING NOTE IS AN E-BOW.

"RUNAROUND" IS A SONG THAT THE VIDEO WAS PLAYED CONSTANTLY ON MTV.  IN IT MICHAEL ANTHONY ALMOST FLEW OFF THE ROTATING CAROUSEL THE BAND PLAYED ON.

"PLEASURE DOME" HAS THREE RIFFS EDWARD PREVIOUSLY WROTE THAT WERE PIECED TOGETHER BY ALEX VAN HALEN.  IT INCLUDED A RIFF ED WROTE ON THE OU812 TOUR, AND AN INTRO HE WROTE YEARS EARLIER.  DURING GULF WAR I INFANTRY USED THIS SONG AS MOTIVATION.

"IN 'N' OUT" SAMMY HAGAR WROTE ABOUT HOW EXPENSIVE IT IS TO COME INTO LIFE, LIVING CHECK TO CHECK, CREDIT ISSUES AND HOW EXPENSIVE IT IS JUST TO DIE !

"MAN ON A MISSION" HAS A MAIN RIFF THAT WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD VAN HALEN ON BASS AND IS PLAYED AT THE INTRO AND BEFORE THE SOLO.  THIS SON IS CLEARLY REFERENCING BEING FOCUSED AND THE POWER OF PERSEVERANCE.

"THE DREAM IS OVER" ON ALBUM IS WONDERFUL AND MANY FELT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED. ON THE LIVE DVD THIS SONG IS TREMENDOUS BUT IT STRANGELY WAS OMITTED FROM THE CD.  THIS IS A VERY PHILOSOPHICAL SONG LIKE "MINE ALL MINE" AND SEEMS LIKE IT MAY HAVE BEEN WROTE ON KEYBOARD, HOWEVER, IT IS PLAYED SIMILAR ON GUITAR TO "AIN'T TALKIN' 'BOUT LOVE", SLOWER AND WITH SUBTLE CHANGES.

"316" WAS PLAYED LIVE FOR YEARS TO BEGIN EDWARD'S FULL LENGTH LIVE SOLO AND THIS WAS ACOUSTICALLY WRITTEN AND PLAYED.  IT WAS DEDICATED ON BEHALF OF WOLFGANG VAN HALEN ON FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE.

"RIGHT NOW" WAS ACTUALLY WRITTEN BEFORE "JUMP" AND APPEARED IN PART, KEYBOARD ONLY, IN A SNIPPET DURING "THE WILD LIFE" FILM.  THE VIDEO FOR THIS SONG WON MANY AWARDS INCLUDING VIDEO OF THE YEAR IN 1992.

"TOP OF THE WORLD" HAS THE ENDING RIFF FROM "JUMP" WHICH WAS USED AS ITS MAIN RIFF.  EDWARD DID NOT WANT THIS ON THE ALBUM, AND IN FACT PREFERRED FIVE OTHER SONGS THAT DID NOT MAKE THE ALBUM OVER "TOP OF THE WORLD".  ANDY JOHNS PERSUADED HIM TO USE THIS SONG HE LOVED IT SO MUCH.  THREE VIDEOS PROMOTED THIS ON MTV; THE CONVENTIONALLY KNOWN VERSION ON THE VIDEO GREATEST HITS, AND TWO LIVE VERSIONS; ONE FROM SACRAMENTO AND ONE FROM DALLAS DURING A FREE "MAKE UP" SHOW.
